Handy Dandy Mnemonic
Five years ago, I was still innocent and barely understand dirty jokes circulated around me. Purely seen, the guys were very expert in these stuffs. It was some what scary to understand them, thus I preferred to remain blurred. But later I found it rather difficult to cope up with the group when stuffs like this were brought up into conversation.
I slowly accepted their way of joking and conversing. Yes. There are six men in my family but I hardly could listen to any dirty jokes out of them when my sister and I were around. Probably this is how they show their respect towards us. When it comes to friends, we are prone to be more open and that’s what I got in this very open friendship.
I’m sure you understand this more than I do. But could you ever imagine people talk about some medical stuffs and come to relate it with some dirty jokes? Yes! The medical students can do it.
During our Anatomy class on Brain and Nervous System (Fuh, it sounds heavy for a final year student. I really have to revise The Human Anatomy again!), I am used to memorize the 12 cranial nerves’ names using this mnemonic: On Old Olympus’ towering top, a Finn and German viewed a hop. The first letter in each word brings the same first letter for the 12 cranial nerves accordingly. I found this tips in the atlas provided by the library. Somehow a week later, I found out that the whole batch was using another mnemonic which was rather funny and easy. Here it goes:
Oh, oh, oh! To touch and feel a girl’s vagina… Ah, heaven!
It’s easier to memorize when it’s more real and by-nature in our life though it’s some kind of dirty joke. Well, people said, if there is something that can benefit you, why don’t you try it. And since then, I use this handy-dandy dirty mnemonic in my study. Haha. And yes, people said, if we blend up the goods and the bads in term of study, we tend to forget faster. The ‘ilmu is not blessed. Ironically, I (we all medical students!) still keep this mnemonic in memory better than the ‘on Old Olympus’!
Dirty jokes do work to balance our mind, sometimes. But don’t overload your head with such over-dirty jokes. It’s dangerous. At times, we do have to be pious, don’t we? Hehe.
Note 1: The 12 cranial nerves’ mnemonic stands for: Olfactory, Optic, Oculomotor, Trochlear, Trigeminal, Abducens, Facial, Auditory (Vestibulocochlear), Glossopharyngeal, Vagus, Accessory, Hypoglossal. It was written in a novel by (sorry, I forgot his name). A few novelholics in my batch commercialized it for Anatomy. I guess it is used everywhere. Who remember the author’s name (and the novel), please leave a comment. I can’t recall it anymore.
Note 2: I’m not being sarcastic. This is just a part of our life in med school. Haha. Jadi, sila bersihkan otak masing-masing selepas membaca entri ini =p
Note 3: This entry reminds me of a film somewhere in 2007: Perfume.
Note 4: I think I’ve lost 2 kg due to over exhausting weekend. I want more! Huhu. But seriously, I lost weight. My weekend seems neverendingly busy till we hit New Year here.
