Handy Dandy Mnemonic

Assalamualaikum wbt

Five years ago, I was still innocent and barely understand dirty jokes circulated around me. Purely seen, the guys were very expert in these stuffs. It was some what scary to understand them, thus I preferred to remain blurred. But later I found it rather difficult to cope up with the group when stuffs like this were brought up into conversation.

I slowly accepted their way of joking and conversing. Yes. There are six men in my family but I hardly could listen to any dirty jokes out of them when my sister and I were around. Probably this is how they show their respect towards us. When it comes to friends, we are prone to be more open and that’s what I got in this very open friendship.

I’m sure you understand this more than I do. But could you ever imagine people talk about some medical stuffs and come to relate it with some dirty jokes? Yes! The medical students can do it.

During our Anatomy class on Brain and Nervous System (Fuh, it sounds heavy for a final year student. I really have to revise The Human Anatomy again!), I am used to memorize the 12 cranial nerves’ names using this mnemonic: On Old Olympus’ towering top, a Finn and German viewed a hop. The first letter in each word brings the same first letter for the 12 cranial nerves accordingly. I found this tips in the atlas provided by the library. Somehow a week later, I found out that the whole batch was using another mnemonic which was rather funny and easy. Here it goes:

Oh, oh, oh! To touch and feel a girl’s vagina… Ah, heaven!

It’s easier to memorize when it’s more real and by-nature in our life though it’s some kind of dirty joke. Well, people said, if there is something that can benefit you, why don’t you try it. And since then, I use this handy-dandy dirty mnemonic in my study. Haha. And yes, people said, if we blend up the goods and the bads in term of study, we tend to forget faster. The ‘ilmu is not blessed. Ironically, I (we all medical students!) still keep this mnemonic in memory better than the ‘on Old Olympus’!

Dirty jokes do work to balance our mind, sometimes. But don’t overload your head with such over-dirty jokes. It’s dangerous. At times, we do have to be pious, don’t we? Hehe.

Note 1: The 12 cranial nerves’ mnemonic stands for: Olfactory, Optic, Oculomotor, Trochlear, Trigeminal, Abducens, Facial, Auditory (Vestibulocochlear), Glossopharyngeal, Vagus, Accessory, Hypoglossal. It was written in a novel by (sorry, I forgot his name). A few novelholics in my batch commercialized it for Anatomy. I guess it is used everywhere. Who remember the author’s name (and the novel), please leave a comment. I can’t recall it anymore.
Note 2: I’m not being sarcastic. This is just a part of our life in med school. Haha. Jadi, sila bersihkan otak masing-masing selepas membaca entri ini =p
Note 3: This entry reminds me of a film somewhere in 2007: Perfume.
Note 4: I think I’ve lost 2 kg due to over exhausting weekend. I want more! Huhu. But seriously, I lost weight. My weekend seems neverendingly busy till we hit New Year here.

Macam tu la yang sepatutnya cikgu. Untuk saya, this is the only thing that I can tolerate, kot. Huhu. Kalau la cikgu tau macam mana life saya kat sini, aduhai, saya jamin cikgu kagum dengan keluhuran nurani saya. Huhuhu =p Adoi.

sbnrnya teknik mengingat tu byk cara. tp aku lbh suka ‘menghayati’ sesuatu subjek utk mengingat fakta. teknik yg sesuai utk otak kiri mcm aku. :)[otak kiri ke?. tk ingat =p]

sesekali teknik cara 18sx blh kot utk ingat fakta. tp tak blh le selalu. sgt bahaya kpd remaja.. hehe

teringat dulu masa ambil stpm, teks sulalatus salatin aku khatam 7 kali baca!. haaa.. kan aku dh kata, aku suka menghayati subjek. hihi..

dn teringat bila ustaz ajar subjek munakahat. semua mata jd segar. yg pompuan konon2 malu. =p

hehehe, kalau benda tu dapat membantu mengingat satu benda yang baik rasanya tak menjadi satu kesalahan asalkan ianya tak melampaukan sarah,hehe..acai dari dulu guna benda2 camtu nak ingat,hehe..maksudnya cari satu perkara yang lawak utk digabungkan ngan fakta..dan yup, memang berkesan..nasib acai bukan jenis subjek yg kena hafal sangat,hehe..byk calculation je..

    oh.

    by the way,
sbg bakal kaunselor, ade juga silibus ni di ajar dalam psikologi pendidikan. humm, banyak cara untuk mengingat ni, ade kaedah nombor, akronim, akrostik, gune kaedah bunyi seakan, gune gambar, gune bende kite suka. Pilih yang mana kita selesa & senang ingat. Insyaallah. boleh =)

huhu. sarah dengan baik hatinya telah memberi saya idea perancangan praktikum ni, ok juge kalau saya buat ceramah kemahiran belajar, fokusnya kemahiran mengingat. heheh. kan kan kan?

** tak suka teknik 18sx tu. Tapi masa form 3 cikgu sains saya ade kasi teknik 18sx tu untuk hapal. masa tu hapal je la. Bile ingat skrg.. eiiiuuuuuu. wek wek wekkk

    Oneib:
Bukan budak Sains je guna benda2 kotor. Budak aliran lain pun sama. Kalau dah lelaki, apa2pun mesti ada kaitan dgn hal ni. Saya tak maksudkan semua tyapi kebanyakannya.

    Pulak dah!

    Kak Inah:
Saya pun macam ni jugak. Saya akan fahamkan semuanya dulu and from there saya boleh ingat. Waktu tu mnemonic dah tak perlu dah kan. Macam kes Bacterial Endocarditis. Mnemonic untuk cover topic ni ialah FROM JANE. Dulu mmg rasa aduhai banyaknya benda. Tapi kalau dah faham the whole thing about BE, mnemonic tu dah tak penting sgt dah. Hehe.

    Nono:
Betul2. Macam tu la. Cuma biasanya kita tengok budak perempuan elok sikit la benda2 yg direka utk bagi ingat.

Sebab dia berjaya meringkaskan otak dia jadi satu cerita pendek. Ewah2. Teringat Germany la tu =p Saya penah cite kat awak kan macam mana life saya kat sini. So, yang betul2 tau saya camne mesti dah faham yang mana saya buat, yang mana saya tak buat. Just happened to be that this 1 is extra special. Satu dunia guna. Huhu.

    Jidin:

Rather than using some weird, funny or obscene text, I prefer the basic alphabet. OOOTTAFAGVOH, it’s already like “OH! The FU*K! Voyeur!”

Oh well, everyone has their methodology. If it works, why not? Hm.. berkat kah?

    Kaklong:
Awak jangan guna nanti. Tak elok tau. Huhu.

Proven! I know what’s the difference. At the last 2 words, am I right? Hehe. See. My theory was correct. This mnemonic is used all over the world. Except for non-English spoken countries like Japan and Korea (maybe). Oh. I tell you what. Saya dah habis revised Anatomy semula for State Exam. Except Nervous System (u know that we study system by system over here). Nabil, all the listed specializations u mentioned in the previous entry were once suggested by my doc. One thing is sure. Everything is related to surgery. Do I look like one? =D

    Eddie:
Don’t worry. You are normal then =D

One thing kan Sarah, I dont know why people particularly in Msia kita ni see Surgery is more glamour and harder compared to Medical. In actual fact, Surgery is the easiest(thru my observationla) in terms of its history taking, workload, differential diagnosis. The diseases are also straightforward. You cut,you suture them back then the disease is cured.Tak mcm medical where u have a long list of differentials and the treatment is tricky.Ramai terpengaruh dgn cerita Hollywood sebenarnye. My two cents =)
    Apa pendapat KS pulak?
